About the Farm and Winemaker  Chris Williams is at the helm of the legendary property, Meerlust. Foundry is his private endeavor where he crafts beautiful Rhône varietal wines. Chris is not one for the limelight and fanfare, much preferring his wines to do the talking for him. Before falling for winemaking, Chris studied law for four years. Fortunately for us, Chris decided to make wine instead. In his spare time Chris loves spending time at his house on the Breede River, taming his wakeboard. Currently petless, Chris and his partner are debating whether or not to get a Weimeraner.
What we think(why we picked it)

There are not a lot of Roussanne, Viogniers and Grenache blancs available locally, even fewer that actually express the grape as they are meant to be. A unique grape converted into wine with exceptional skill, we feel like that’s what Tank & Barrel is all bout. Turns out the Platter people agreed with us as they bestowed a well-deserved 5-star rating to Chris’ Grenache – after we selected it of course !
Region and Soils:

According to Chis, 2013 was a dream vintage compared to 2014! 2013 was a moderately cool vintage, so great fruit expression and nice natural acidity are the hallmarks of the class of 2013. The grapes come from a small belt of grapes planted on the granitic soils of the Voor Paardeberg. The nutrient poor soils and location causes a natural concentration of flavours without having to leave the grapes hanging for extra ripeness. This preserves the delicate nature of these grapes. Chris has exciting aspirations for his brand: “The Foundry will expand its range to a selection of single vineyard wines from different appellations and terroirs around the Cape, much as the great negociant houses of Burgundy and the Rhone valley do.”
